Horror Films

Ok time for you movie buffs to strut your stuff. Next week I have a presentation and essay to do for my cinema studies class. The film genre for the week is Horror films. Now since I don't actually like/watch horror films I need a bit of assistance.

I've decided to focus my presentation on the way women are portrayed in horror films. In particular I'm looking at comparing the concept of the monstrous feminine with the damsel in distress portrayals.

Pretty much what I'm asking you guys to do is to suggest some possible films that I could use as examples to explore these ideas. I'll come back later and post a bit more by what I mean about the monstrous feminine and such but I actually have to do the reading about it first :P

um these are just off the top of my head, there are more but I'll post them later

Woman as hero
-Alien (Ripley's probly the stongest woman in any horror/sci-fi film ever)

-Scream (also a great film for refferences for other horror film, it explores a lot of the cliche's)

-Rosemary's Baby (this is one great film too)

Woman as villan
-Carrie
-The Exorcist (although she's a child and could also be a victim)
-Attack of the 40 foot woman

Woman as helpless victim (most films but here are a few clasic examples)
-Dracular
-Psycho
-Haloween

one of the key rules for women in horror films
-the slut always dies, only good girls live (Haloween, etc.)

hope thats of some help

Scream 2 is a good one for the woman as both the victim and Hero. So is the ring (though it is soooo scary). The female villan is a child in this film, but unlike the exorcist I don't think she'd fall into the 'victim' category aswell.

Another classic film with the helpless victim is when a stranger calls.

Scream is definately one film you should see. It will make you jump a bit, but it's quite funny aswell so it's not too scary. As Immy pointed out, it really gives you so many of the horror film cliches and a large number of the classic horror films are mentioned.

Thanks for the tips guys. Suprisingly my video store doesn't have some of the more popular ones.

I got;
The Woods
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
The Exorcist
Wrong Turn
Doppelganger
Dawn of the Dead
Basic Instinct
I know what you did last summer

Now I just have to 'watch' them and write an essay and prepare a presentation by Wednesday evening.

Wrong Turn is just all kinds of weird and wrong! But Eliza is in it which makes it all good =D

Presentation is done. Yay. Ended up looking at The Exorcist (Woman as Possessed Body), I know what you did last summer (Woman as Victim/Final Girl) and Carrie (Woman as Witch). I showed a scene from The Exorcist and one from I Know What You Did Last Summer.

I'll link to the essay when I've actually done it. Thank goodness you don't have to reference orals on the spot :P

Thought I'd just post a link to the essay. As far as essays go it's not the greatest. I had to cut quite a lot out of the presentation version due to length. I had a lot more detail about the monstrous portrayals than I have put in the essay. Sometimes word lengths suck.
